Barriers and facilitators to family support in EPI programs

A systematic literature review was conducted in response to an Applied Health Research Question posed by the Early Psychosis Intervention Ontario Network (EPION). The network was interested in learning about the barriers and facilitators for implementing support for families of individuals experiencing early psychosis.

Family support is a core component of the Early Psychosis Intervention model, but it tends to have varied rates of implementation by programs and varied rates of uptake by families.

A key finding from the literature review was that different families have different support needs and one size does not fit all. Many families do not want or need more intensive support. Adopting a flexible needs-based approach to delivery can help programs be more responsive to families and may reduce the burden on EPI programs.
